Self-reliance!!! That is the message that we got from the Community
Preparedness Coordinator, Matt Brisbois.
With 80,000 people there is no way that the police can handle taking care of
everyone's needs. That lesson was evident from the Katrina disaster. Each
individual should plan to be able to take care of themselves for up to two weeks.
There are terrific kits for such emergencies available at the Red Cross in Santa
Ana.
Essentials
- 11 gallons of water for multiple uses
- a battery flashlight by one's bed in case a quake is in the middle of the
night and the power is cut off
- keeping medications together for easy retrieval in the event one has to
exit one's property
- do not turn off the gas unless one thinks that there is positively a leak (it
will take up to two weeks to turn it back on
- electricity can be shut off and returned to power with the flip of the switch
- a battery operated radio for emergency communications
Safety Measures
- Establish a family contact in another area of the country (non-earthquake)
to which everyone in your family can call when they are trying to find out if
you are all right
- Keep cash in your home as bank ATMs will possibly be down
- Check on elderly neighbors
