Resident Feedback Question - Summer 2007
? CdM Branch Library Closure
City studies show that the CdM Branch Library is underutilized. As a result the City is reviewing plans to
close our local branch, and use the property to expand the CdM Fire Station next door. The City is looking at
incorporating a library function as part of the Oasis renovation.

! Response
We had 31 members who responded by email, and over 200 residents who attended the three public
outreach meetings at the CdM Branch Library. A number of our email respondents indicated they needed
more information before they would voice an opinion or preference. Many of our email respondents felt
that moving the Branch Library was a good choice, particularly since Central Library has many youth-
oriented programs.
The consensus at the various outreach meetings, however, was that the proposal to move the CdM Branch
Library to the Oasis Senior Center would not be supported by the residents. The library at the Oasis would
not include children's materials or programs, and would not be as accessible to the walking public as the
current branch location is. There was consensus that the CdM Branch Library could be reconfigured along
with the fire station to provide more up-to-date facilities for both services. Residents asked that children's
books and programs be re-instituted at the CdM Branch to serve children accompanied by parents and
grandparents alike. Residents also indicated that there would be a willingness to do some fund raising to
help insure that CdM retains its own branch library, as part of the "heart and fabric" of the community.
Council Member Nancy Gardner will present the results of these meetings at the September 25 City
Council meeting.
